"The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) resumed with their patrols at 5.15am while police divers from Simon's Town and life guards searched for the missing person... at this stage nothing has been found," said Inspector November Filander.
The victim has been identified as a tourist in South Africa.
Four rescue boats and a helicopter were immediately dispatched to search for the missing person but the search was stopped at sunset on Tuesday, said NSRI station commander Darren Zimmerman.
News of the attack came just hours after Cape Town's disaster management services issued a statement to warn bathers along the False Bay coastline that white sharks had been spotted in the water. - Sapa
