Former Bafana Bafana striker and captain Shaun Bartlett has joined The Mercury newspaper in Durban as its World Football Reading Passport champion.

The initiative, which will run in The Mercury from Tuesday - builds on the popular Learn and Teach page in the newspaper's weekly Challenger supplement.

It will be published every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in the main section and will end on July 7.

In South Africa, the Mercury has partnered with Mondi to ensure that the project reaches as many children as possible in KwaZulu-Natal.

The passport offers educational development through football as young readers learn about journalism,
sports, geography, language (both writing and analysing) and character by going into the newspaper to seek out more related editorial content.

The Mercury's editor Angela Quintal said on Sunday: "As many a teacher, and parent with young children, will know - and even dread - the extra- long holiday over the World Cup will be a challenge.

"We see the passport as an innovative way to ensure that we play our part in educating young readers in a fun way during an important period for us as a country."

Readers are invited to complete a set of fun assignments which will be published over 14 days and which can be reviewed by a teacher, parent or care-giver.

Once completed, the reader will receive a "distinguished player" certificate signed by Bartlett.

Children will also be able to win prizes for the best passport, says Quintal.

The passport is an initiative of the World Association of Newspapers and the International Association of Sports Newspapers, with the support of Norske Skog, a Norway-based global paper producer.
