Bid for big fee hike lands Acsa in 'Hall of Shame'

JOHANNESBURG: The Airports Company SA (Acsa) has become a member of the air transport industry's "Hall of Shame" for proposing a huge increase in its fees, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) has said.
"This is just in time to greet all the visitors who will be coming to the next soccer World Cup," Iata's director-general and chief executive officer, Giovanni Bisignani, said in commenting on Acsa's proposal to raise its fees by 133 percent next year and in 2011.
Bisignani said Iata had revised its outlook for next year to an expected $5.6 billion (about R42m) global net loss, larger than the previously forecast loss of $3.8bn.
For this year, Iata maintained its forecast of a $11bn net loss.
"We are ending an annus horribilis that brings to a close the 10 challenging years of an aviation decennis horribilis," Bisignani said in a statement.
Between 2000 and this year, airlines lost $49.1bn, or $5bn a year on average, he said. It was likely the worst was behind the industry, however. - Sapa
