Blast kills Shia pilgrims in Iraq
A bomb killed five Shia pilgrims in a procession in north-east Iraq and blasts in Baghdad killed two more as millions of people marched to commemorate the Ashura Shia religious observance yesterday. Pilgrims travelling to Karbala came under repeated attack. Dozens were killed and more than 150 wounded.
Avalanche buries six in Italian Alps
Six people were killed by an avalanche in northern Italy. The victims were two tourists who had gone missing in the Italian Alps and four rescuers who had been looking for them, reports said.
Thousands mourn at Bhutto's tomb
More than 5 000 loyalists flocked to the tomb of former Pakistan prime minister Benazir Bhutto, mourning the second anniversary of her assassination and demanding her killers be brought to justice.
Cavers trapped for Christmas
Three cavers who spent five days, including Christmas, trapped deep underground in the Pyrenees of south-west France, yesterday climbed to the surface helped by rescuers, reports said.
Beirut bomb kills Hamas members
A Beirut bomb blast killed two Hamas members, a Gaza Strip spokesman said. Lebanese security sources described the target as a car used by Hamas.
Second Fillipine ferry disaster
A ferry sank in the Philippines in a second sea disaster in three days. Six bodies were recovered and 22 people are missing. Rescue teams saved 60 passengers and crew.
Israeli soldier shot in row with comrade
An Israeli soldier was killed by a comrade when a fight broke out at a shopping mall in the Israeli desert town of Beersheva.
