JOHANNESBURG: Stacy Bregman has earned a coveted spot in this week’s Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale in Southport, England, by coming through final qualifying.
Playing at Hillside, a demanding links next door to Birkdale, the 23-year-old from Johannesburg posted a 73 in difficult windy conditions to be one of 17 qualifiers among 90 hopefuls.
Bregman joins a classy line-up of 122 exempt players – including fellow South Africans Ashleigh Simon and Lee-Anne Pace – in the main draw, with the first round set for tomorrow.
Julie Yang, a 15-year-old from South Korea, also made the grade on 73, to become the youngest player ever to qualify for the Women’s British Open, one of the game’s Majors.
