July 29, 2010 Edition 2

NAIROBI: The 37-year-old Burger Lambrechts led a South African clean sweep of the medals in the men’s shot put on the first day of the African athletics championships.

The veteran regained the title he had won in Dakar in 1998 with a best effort of 18.63m to edge out countryman Rolf Potgieter by a centimetre. Orazio Cremona, 21, won the bronze for third place by reaching 18.27.

The day’s other two finals were won by Kenyan Wilson Kiprop (men’s 10 000m) and Senegalese Amy Sene (women’s hammer throw). – Sapa
