DURBAN - DA federal chairperson Helen Zille was allegedly assaulted and mishandled by police officers in the Eastern Cape on Monday.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) says it has appointed an investigator.
Ipid spokesperson Grace Langa explained that their Eastern Cape office received a complaint of assault and mishandling by police officers.
“It’s alleged the officers assaulted and mishandled Mrs Helen Zille. The case was brought to our attention, we have allocated an investigator who is trying to get hold of Helen Zille,” she said.

Langa said efforts to contact Zille have been unsuccessful, adding that IPID hoped to get into contact with her at least by the end of today.
“In this incident it is reported that one individual was taking video of the police and they took video and it was later returned. The person has opened a case of theft against those officers.”

She said that Ipid would collect the docket and its investigator will resume investigations on Tuesday morning. More details would be provided as IPID continued with its investigation, after contacting all the witnesses and Zille.
In a tweet, Ipid said it was alleged that Zille was talking to the voters and one person reported her to be campaigning. The presiding officer allegedly asked her to leave and she refused. It was alleged that the police were called in and they pushed her out of the voting station.
